Since buying our first home in 2017, I’ve learned so much about my style and tastes in home decor. We’re moving from a cape to a 1919 colonial, and I’m sharing how my minimalistic tendencies are shifting to fit the bones of this new (old) home. Modern Traditional, here I come!
T-Minus SEVEN DAYS until we move to our new house!
Quick Recap: Last August my husband almost died and we decided to stop waiting and start the life we’ve always talked about. We sold our beautiful (totally remodeled) home for a 1919 colonial on 16 acres. You can read more about it here but LOL the house I refer to in that post is no longer the house we’re moving to.
A casual design 180
When we were remodeling our 1st home back in 2018, I was very much infatuated with the minimalist look. Partly because clutter gives me anxiety and partly because we couldn’t afford lots of home decor. Over time we added to the design to give it a little personality and it ended up suiting us quite well.
Since then, I’ve been able to learn more about my style and refine my tastes. I’ve also realized that it wasn’t that we couldn’t afford home décor back when we renovated, it was that being trendy is expensive and keeping up with those trends is even more expensive.
With first homes, there are lots of lessons you just have to learn through experience and time. When we went under contract with the house we’re moving to next week, I made the decision to embrace slow design. Instead of going in guns blazing and trying to style every room at once, I want to live in the space for a bit and really learn more about the house. What rooms get the best sunlight, where do we spend most of our time, how does the kitchen flow at meal time. We have big plans for renovations down the road a bit, but starting our farm is the number one priority this season.
Modern Traditional Vibes
Our new house was built in 1919. I’m a big fan of embracing the charm of this house while still living in this century. I’ve been scouring Pinterest for inspiration in modern traditionalism and OMG its gonna be so fun to dive in to this style. I’m loving the idea of print mixing, warmer colors, and all the texture. Full disclosure: I’m not really sure if “modern traditional” is a recognized style. To me it just means embracing the details of older home styles in terms of wallpaper, furniture styles, and decor, while finding a way to keep it fresh for today.
I put together this vision board for our new living room. Its really long, so I’m thinking of breaking it up into 2 “zones”, but this is the general feel I’m going for. In my old office, I used Etsy art to make a gallery wall and I will 100% be doing something similar in this room.

DIY Overload
This house has so many unique features. You can walk 360 degrees around the 2nd floor staircase. There’s an entire hallway of built-in storage. In the side entry, there’s a fully brick bar… like completely brick. The screened in front porch is huge and has a hot tub in it. The house is actually oriented backward on the street (!!). All of these fun details mean an even more fun DIY to come. I cannot WAIT to get my hands on some crafty projects and start making this house a home.

I guess this is my very informal announcement that in addition to the new house content you’ll be seeing here, I will also be talking (probably a lot) about the farm we’re starting. While I love a gift guide and will still be sharing that kind of content, it will start to look a little different around here. Hopefully you love it as much as I do!
