This dairy free coffee recipe is simple to make, and will save you major $!
Recently, a “Big Brand Coffee Shop” came out with a delicious sounding dairy free coffee that I bought on a whim. I was sorely disappointed because a) IT WAS $5 FOR A MEDIUM and b) it was good but like, not $5 good.
The Cheapo™ in me was convinced I could recreate this at home for approx. 5 pennies. So I did! This drink is fantastically simple to make, and with a few add ins it can really hit gourmet status.
Pro Tips
Here are some things I learned while making some different versions of this:
Dark Brown vs. Light Brown Sugar – The only difference between the two is the amount of molasses added into the sugar. I had light brown sugar on hand so that’s what I used. Dark brown would yield a very slightly sweeter, darker syrup.
Agave vs. Honey – Honey would disqualify this drink as “vegan”, so I used agave. While they do have different tastes, they will both add a natural sweetness to the oat milk without being overwhelming.
Iced Coffee vs. Cold Brew – I used iced coffee in this recipe. I found this amazing organic french roast that we have an auto subscription for! Cold brew would be an excellent alternative if you’re looking for a caffeine boost, but I feel that in my bones… hard pass.
Blender vs Food Processor – my food processor was fine for a small test batch, but got messy when I increased the liquid. A blender is better for larger batches! (Don’t blend for more than 30 seconds on medium speed for best results)
Strainer vs. Cheesecloth/bag – I used a strainer, but immediately bought this nut milk bag when I realized how long it would process. Patience is not my virtue with stuff like this.
With summer just around the corner, you can bet I’ll be making this delicious dairy free coffee all the time. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
