Zillow Gone Wild
Nothing makes you sweat faster than knowing the inside of your home is about to be put on display for the whole internet to see (and judge).
Sure, that’s kind of what I do here on a weekly basis. But this is a controlled environment and I can choose what to show and what to hide. When you put your house on the market, its a whole different ball game.
Every nook and cranny of your home has to be in the best shape you can manage so that someone walks in and needs to buy it for full asking price. I am my own worst critic, and this is the stuff of my nightmares.
We’ve been going through the house with a fine tooth comb, touching up paint and repairing small issues. Now we’re at the part of this process where everything has to be pared down and styled to sell.
Staging a home you currently live in with 2 small children is… stressful. And expensive!! I’ve been trying to re-purpose as much as possible so I don’t spend a fortune on stuff. My office is my pride and joy, but is seriously lacking in light. I journeyed to the basement in hopes that I could find that one floor lamp we used to have in our apartment but didn’t work in this house that I hope I didn’t throw away.
The Makeover
Lo and behold – there it was. Covered in dust and cob webs, begging for a new life. The lamp itself is actually quite nice, but the teal-ish hue was not great. I saw the potential and got to work!
The lamp was a semi-gloss finish, so I grabbed a sanding block and scuffed up the surface to give it some texture. I had some left over spray paint from my fireplace DIY that was matte black (and high heat resistant). I sprayed the whole lamp with this acting as a base for my new color.
Once the black base coat was done, I brought the lamp inside to be finished. I grabbed my trusty friend Rub n’ Buff in Antique Gold and got to work! Using a sponge brush, I applied the rub n buff all in one direction to get a realistic effect. I knew I wouldn’t be able to achieve that with my typical paper towel application.
After the 1st coat was applied, it looked a little too… rustic for my liking, so after letting it dry for a bit I went back in to cover up some of the bare spots. I didn’t want this to be a solid coating, but I wanted it to still look refined.
The Final Result
I am so happy with how this floor lamp makeover turned out! It was such an easy solution for a slightly awkward corner in my office, and I saved a ton of money be re-purposing something I already owned. I never thought I would be able to use that light again, but I just extended its life with me by years. Would you do something like this to an old piece you own? Tell me in the comments!
